WOMEN RIGHT AND HUMAN EQUALITY
Two months ago, an estimated three million people turned out for the largest protest in American history: the Women’s March on Washington, which took place in cities around the world the the day after President Donald J. Trump’s inauguration. It's a spirit of resistance that's continued ever since. On a recent afternoon during New York Fashion Week, W asked some of the fashion industry's biggest names to take time amidst the chaos of the shows to come together against the controversial travel ban and make a defiant statement: “I am an immigrant.”
Caroline de Maigret was one of the 81 participants in the video. Afterwards, she was inspired to create a similar effort for International Women’s Day, which, amidst the new administration's moves to restrict abortion access and defund public healthcare groups like Planned Parenthood, has taken on an even weightier significance this year. So, over the course of Paris Fashion Week—that is to say, before today’s nationwide "Day Without a Woman" strike—names like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid all followed W’s lead in proclaiming, without any hesitation, their support for women’s rights.
They were hardly the only models willing to make their voices heard. Joan Smalls, Hailey Baldwin, Anna Ewers, Carolyn Murphy, Winnie Harlow, and Natalia Vodianova are just some of those who stood in solidarity alongside designers like Lanvin’s Bouchra Jarrar, who (like Maria Grazia Chiuri at Dior) is in the rare position of being a woman leading a storied French fashion house. Designers Simone Porte Jacquemus and Valentino's Pierpaolo Piccioli and musician Travis Scott are also included, alongside Sienna Miller, Alexa Chung, Michèle Lamy, Carine Roitfeld, and Suzy Menkes.
“Each and every one of us came from a woman, so we are all involved in that game,” said de Maigret on why she was eager for men to be in the film, which she produced in partnership with W’s Edward Enninful.
After all, it's a message anyone should be able to support. "Women's rights are human rights,” reminds a beret-capped Hadid.
“Please respect yourself,” Jenner echoes. “And respect women.”
